Welcome to the third edition of the TuSimple Intern Spotlight series!

This series shares stories about interns across TuSimple, their background,  work, and ultimately, why they decided to join the TuSimple team. Today’s post is all about Andrew, an intern this summer at TuSimple.

Meet Andrew!

Andrew is an Electrical Engineering Intern at our Tucson facility. Over the course of the summer, Andrew has worked with the Engineering Integration Team (EIT) on updating wiring diagrams and documentation of electrical systems on board TuSimple’s current fleet of trucks. He has also assisted in the development of electrical designs for our future autonomous trucks. Andrew is currently working towards his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University.

What first sparked your interest in working at TuSimple?

Back in October of 2021, while looking for summer internship opportunities, TuSimple had come up during my search.  After looking more into what the company did, I was beyond impressed with the autonomy capabilities of these vehicles. I knew that working here would present an extremely unique opportunity to work with autonomous vehicles and help build a foundation in my professional life that would set me up to succeed.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the members of the TuSimple team here in Tucson. Each welcomed me to the team with open arms and has given me meaningful professional advice for life beyond university. While the TuSimple team is a diverse one, the one trait each held in common was their intentional action of ensuring that the environment I worked in was one I felt comfortable learning in.

What was the impact you’re most proud of to have contributed to during your internship?

This summer I had the chance to help build and retrofit trucks with TuSimple autonomous technology. Being part of the production process left me with a special sense of satisfaction knowing that the work I was doing was directly impacting the heart of TuSimple’s day-to-day operations. This also gave me great hands-on experience when it came to learning about the functions of each hardware component and how each worked together in the whole system. This foundation was vital as the summer progressed and allowed me a greater understanding of how the work I was doing would impact the hardware on the trucks.

Which TuSimple value (Safeguard, Own, Communicate, Collaborate, Innovate) resonated most within your intern team?

Collaborate is the TuSimple Value that has resonated with my intern team the most. My mentor has stressed the importance of this value especially when it came to the many projects I worked on because the work required collaboration with many others in order to properly implement the goals we were striving towards. The work TuSimple does would be impossible without this effective collaboration.

What advice would you give to aspiring interns and professionals at TuSimple?

Always ask questions. That may be a cliché when it comes to internships, but nothing could be truer. The times I learned the most were the times when I asked questions. I cannot stress how thankful I was to each of the professionals at TuSimple for putting in the effort to ensure I worked in an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and continued wanting to learn about the work I was a part of.
